Fixed braces

Fixed braces

What are fixed braces?

Fixed braces are a popular orthodontic treatment option for correcting misaligned teeth. Fixed braces use brackets, wires and elastic bands to apply pressure to the teeth for gradual movement. Unlike removable aligners, they stay in place throughout the entire teeth straightening process, making them an effective solution for severe cases of misalignment. Braces can also be used to correct rotations, gaps and other orthodontic issues. They are generally more cost-effective than removable aligners and can provide results in a shorter amount of time. With regular appointments and frequent check-ups, your dentist will ensure that your braces remain in good condition to achieve the desired outcome.

How do fixed braces work?

A wire is placed through your brackets that connect them and create tension. With this tension, it gradually moves your teeth to the planned position. Regular appointments are needed usually every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on each individual case. During your appointment, your dentist will check and adjust your braces. This may include changing the wires and bands to maintain the movement of your teeth.

How long do fixed braces take to work?

Every patient is different and requires different treatment needs, which may affect the time needed to move your teeth. When only minimal movement is needed, this simple alignment can be completed within a few months. If movement needed is more complex, it can sometimes take up to a couple of years to complete treatment. After your consultation with your dentist, a treatment plan will be created, and a proposed estimated treatment period will be given.

How much do they cost in the UK?

The cost of fixed braces at Knighton Dental Practice will depend on your treatment needs. We offer traditional fixed braces as well as ceramic braces, which are more expensive but more discreet.

Under 18 may be eligible for free NHS treatment, which typically uses traditional metal braces. Children would need to be referred by their dentist to an orthodontist specialist, who would assess their eligibility. If they don’t qualify for NHS care, private treatment is available here at Knighton Dental.

We offer FREE consultations with our Treatment Coordinator. During this appointment, you can discuss all your teeth straightening options available to you. Also, ask any questions you may have.
